Meknes

Meknes is one of Morocco's four Imperial Cities, known for its grand architecture from the reign of Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century. The sultan transformed Meknes into a showcase of Moroccan power, building massive gates such as Bab Mansour, one of the most impressive gateways in North Africa, along with extensive grain storage facilities, stables for 12,000 horses, and a vast royal palace complex. The city's medina is less crowded than those of Marrakech or Fes, offering a more relaxed exploration experience. The Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail is one of the few sacred sites in Morocco open to non-Muslim visitors. Nearby, the Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site, feature remarkably preserved mosaics and columns. The pilgrimage town of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun is also a short drive away.
